ROBOT FIGHT CLUB NEWS: HEAR FROM RFC'S GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Hello Needy Cat fans!

This week’s RFC blog is brought to you by Hanna, the lead graphic designer for Robot Fight Club! A self-declared nerd and dog owner with a Bachelors in graphic design and communication, we imagine it might have been difficult for her to come to terms with working with Needy CAT games. That’s enough of my rambling! Let’s hear it from Hanna!

It’s Hanna!

Hello again Needy Cat fans!

I hope you’re well! I’m Hanna Björkman and I’m the graphic designer for Robot Fight Club.

The most important part of graphic design, for me, is usability. I want players to pick up a component and intuitively know how it works and how it interacts with the other components in the game. Before I started this project I mainly focused on creating really good rulebooks, as I feel that a bad rulebook can ruin a whole game for you. I even wrote my bachelor's thesis on how to design a good rulebook.

However, for Robot Fight Club I’ve made all the graphic design for the whole game, which has been great. It’s a completely different experience to get to work on every aspect of a game from the start, and not have to just live with the decisions that have been made before I was brought in. I also feel that Needy Cat games have been listening to my suggestions when they have been valid, but also called me out on things that I might have not done perfectly. This has resulted in some really great design decisions, and an overall design that I’m proud to put my name on.

The most challenging part of this project was getting the style just right. Needy Cat Games have, from the start, known exactly what they want in terms of style and theme. However, those kinds of things are really hard to explain to someone else, and really easy to misinterpret. Therefore we had to go through a number of iterations before they were satisfied, but that just made it feel so much better to get the “This looks ace!” comment at the end. I’ve had to challenge both my creative abilities and my technical abilities in the adobe programs in order to get all the assets just right, and I’ve learned so much during this project.
